At a meeting with the Science Council (VR) on 18 October 2007 the "FEL community" was asked to form a group with which VR could interact regarding FEL issues and the In-Kind Contributions for XFEL. Janos Hajdu and Mats Larsson jointly called a smaller group to discuss actions and the SFEL is the first result of this work.

2008 November 19-20: A workshop was held in Uppsala: "Swedish Interest in FEL based Science".

2008 April 4: A meeting was held at VR to discuss the In-Kind contriubtion process and the VR call for funding.

2007 November 8: A meeting was held at Ångström in Uppsala during which the SFEL was formed.
