Caption: A prototype neutron detector developed by the Photonuclear Group at the existing Max-LAB (foreground, silver). "Tool-less assembly" was the design theme. Typical electronics associated with particle detection are shown in the background.

detector lab

Caption: Support frame for the focal-plane array. 160 individual electron detectors are mounted in this frame, which is then encased within a protective sleeve and sealed against room light. Analog and digital signals from the electron detectors emerge from the light-tight detector casing via the blue high-density ECL connectors mounted along the top.

detector lab

Caption: Electron detectors for the focal-plane array. Plastic scintillators are used to convert the energy deposited by the electrons to a flash of light. Each of the electron detectors has been polished and assembled by hand, then wrapped in aluminized mylar to better contain the individual flashes of light.
