MAX IV

Casting of MAX IV starts

The construction of MAX IV is now in a new stage. The concrete casting started in the morning of 24 August when the lift shaft of the linear accelerator was moulded. The accelerator will be below ground level, so the lift is an important feature.


The so called beam dump will be the next item to cast. A beam dump is the construction where the electron beam from the linear accelerator will be stopped, after it has been used in the machine. You don't want the beam to continue into the surroundings, so it is efficiently stopped in the beam dump by concrete and iron walls.

 

Gjutningen av MAX IV börjar nu

I och med att betonggjutningen startar kommer bygget av MAX IV in i ett nytt skede. Förmiddagen den 24 augusti började hisschaktet till linjäracceleratorn att gjutas. Acceleratorn kommer att finnas under marknivå, så hissen är en väsentlig del.


Den så kallade stråldumpen blir nästa del att gjuta. I stråldumpen stoppar man elektronstrålen från linjäracceleratorn efter att den använts i maskinen. Elektronstrålen ska inte fortsätta ut i omgivningarna, så därför stoppas den effektivt i stråldumpen av tjocka lager med betong och järn.
