MAX IV is planned to be the next generation synchrotron radiation facility in Sweden. It will
replace the existing laboratory consisting of the MAX I, II and III storage rings. The main
sources at MAX IV are two storage rings (1.5 GeV and 3 GeV) with state-of-the-art low emittance for the production
of soft and hard x-rays. The linac injector will provide short pulses to a short pulse facility.
This solution allows the production
of synchrotron radiation with optimal characteristics in a wide energy region, fulfilling the needs
of most diverse research areas.
The MAX IV accelerators
The MAX IV design also includes an option for a Free Electron Laser as a second development stage
of the facility.

Contract ready for the MAX IV building
The construction and real estate companies PEAB and Wihlborgs have made an agreement with Lund University for
the construction of the MAX IV building.

The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet VR) has through an international group of experts
evaluated the revised design of the MAX IV facility.

A Memorandum of Understanding
On April 27th at the Old Bishops House in Lund a Memorandum of Understanding was
signed between the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish Governmental Agency for
Innovation Systems (VINNOVA), Lund University and Region Skåne, defining the start of
the MAX IV project. These stakeholders represent a large fraction of the first phase
investment costs. A consortium will be set up with the goal to break ground in 2010.
MAX IV financing
The Swedish Government has, December 4th, appointed Anders Flodström (University Chancellor)
as negotiator to produce a basis for a decision on the financing of the MAX IV project. A report to
the Ministry of Education and Research is due on March 1 2009.
MAX IV in the Research and Innovation Bill
The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet VR) has
been commissioned by the Swedish Government to evaluate the
conditions for the MAX IV facility. The positive and
constructive report was sent to the Government in June 2008.
The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet VR) has,
through two international groups of experts, evaluated the
proposal for the MAX IV facility:
The town of Lund is working actively in the support of the MAX IV
facility to become a part of the new
