I 711

The Crystallography Beamline

at MAX II

The crystallography beamline I711 at MAX-lab has been in operation since 1997 and through its life time the beamline has been used both for single crystal diffraction (macromolecular as well as small molecule), powder diffraction and until recently small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS).
The present setup is a 4-circle diffractometer with kappa geometry, capable of doing both single crystal and powder diffraction using the large area CCD detector.
The beamline is available for academic users through proposals to MAX-lab and part of the beamtime is used by commercial users.

Technical Details

Source

Multi-pole wiggler, period= 174 mm, 27 poles, Bmax = 1.8 T.

Pre-mirror

Vertically focusing cylindrical mirror

Monochromator

Single asymmetrically cut Si(111) crystal with horizontal diffraction plane. The crystal is bendable for horizontal focusing.

Wavelength range available

0.95 - 1.4 Å.

Wavelength resolution

E/dE ~ 103

Photon flux on sample

  > 1011 photons/sec for wavelengths > 1 Å, behind slits 0.3 x 0.3 mm2.

Spot size on sample

Focused spot size 1.0(h) x 0.5(v) mm2 but the spot size is further collimated down to usually 0.3 x 0.3 mm2 for most applications.
